Azza Sabry graduated from the American University in Cairo in 1978; with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in Political Science. Her father worked for Aghbar Al Youm newspaper and ever since she was young she loved journalism and writing for newspapers.
She got married in her junior year and gave birth to her first baby during her senior year. During her time in university she worked with her father in editing and translation for Aghbar Al Youm. After graduation she traveled to Saudi Arabia and all her plans of working with her father changed.
Prior to AUC, she was in an all girl high school so joining a mixed gender society was beneficial. She had to learn how to deal with members of the opposite sex on daily bases. She also learnt how to be self-dependent; picking her own classes, schedule and professors.
She says that AUC students were looked at as academically inferior, spoiled and rich kids who have everything handed to them on a silver platter. Also, she said that employment was much easier for AUC students; making others envy them and therefore were frowned upon by most in society.
She believes that graduates should not just settle with a Bachelor’s degree and should continue studying for their Master’s and maybe even for a Doctorate.
